No headway in Abu Salem's extradition: CBI
Wednesday, March 12 2003 22:25 Hrs (IST)

Kolkata: There has not been any headway in the extradition of underworld don Abu Salem to India from Portugal, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) director P C Sharma said on March 12.

"The matter stands where it was," Sharma told reporters at the West Bengal Secretariat, when asked whether there has been any headway in the extradition of Salem.

Abu Salem, who was arrested in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon on September 18 last year on charges of travelling with fake documents along with his girlfriend Monica Bedi, has 60 murder cases against him in India.

Despite an assurance from India, after several rounds of talks, that Salem would not be sentenced to death if convicted, Lisbon refused to hand him over to the Indian authorities.
