Ahmedabad: Police fired in the air and burst teargas shells to quell an unruly mob
as violence erupted on March 14 in communally sensitive Vadodara city in Gujarat
during a Muharram procession, leaving four people injured.
Two police vehicles were torched by rioters who indulged in heavy stone-pelting in
Vadi area, forcing police to fire 10 rounds in the air, official sources
said.
A red alert was sounded in the city on March 13 and police and paramilitary
personnel kept strict vigil in vulnerable areas.
Tension gripped Pirana town in Ahmedabad rural after Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu
Parishad (VHP) activists told Muslim community leaders not to take out Tazia
procession which, however, was staged peacefully.
