'Lifting sanctions against Pak not to affect India'
Sunday, March 16 2003 14:12 Hrs (IST)

Patna: Defence Minister George Fernandes on March 16 said lifting of economic sanction against Pakistan by America would have no impact on India and said Washington always considers Pakistan as its best friend and its love for America is well known.

Fernandes told reporters at the Patna airport that after the September 11 terrorist attack on World Trade Centre, a global coalition was formed to fight terrorism, but India was fighting Pak sponsored terrorism for the past several years and would continue to fight on its own.

Fernandes condemned March 15 night's militant attack on a police picket in Gool area of Udhampur district in Jammu and Kashmir and said it may be the handiwork of mercenaries who had crossed the borders before the onset of winter.

Asked if India should go for making inter-continental ballistic missiles (ICBMS), Fernandes said, ''We have not given a thought to it but I personally feel that there shall be reduction in making bombs and other warheads in the changed scenario.''
