Beijing: Underlining the need for building a long-term constructive and co-operative
relationship between India and China, Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee has said
that this would help in maintaining peace and stability not only in Asia but across
the world.
"The process of building trust and understanding continues. In this new century, we
seek to build a long-term, constructive and co-operative relationship based on the
principles of Panchsheel, mutual sensitivity to each other's concerns and equality,"
Vajpayee said in a congratulatory message to China's newly-elected Premier Wen
Jiabao.
"This will be to mutual benefit and in the interest of peace and stability in Asia
and in the world," he said.
Vajpayee, who is expected to visit China later this year, expressed wish to work
with Wen in achieving the objective of establishing long-term, constructive and co-
operative ties.
He pointed out that in the past few years, relations between India and China have
diversified and developed.
Vajpayee also noted that India and China are two ancient civilisations with a rich
tradition of mutual exchanges.
"As the two largest and most populous developing countries, we face similar
opportunities and challenges in the economic and social development of our nations,"
he said.
Congratulating Wen on his elevation, Vajpayee said, "Please accept my warm
congratulations on your election as Premier of the State Council of the People's
Republic of China. I wish you every success in the discharge of your high
responsibilities."
Wen, 60, was confirmed as successor to Zhu Rongji by the National People's Congress,
China's ceremonial Legislature, at its annual two-week session.
