New Delhi: US President George W Bush spoke to Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee
this evening (Mar 20) and discussed the evolving situation in Iraq.
The telephonic conversation comes hours after Bush ordered military strikes on Iraq
with President Saddam Hussein rejecting his ultimatum to leave the country or face
war.
Vajpayee explained the Indian position on the developments.
In a calibrated response earlier in the day, the External Affairs Ministry had said
the military actions lacked justification, seriously impaired the authority of the
UN system and asked the international community to pay special attention to the
humanitarian situation in Iraq.
