New Delhi: India on March 20 said the US-led military action in Iraq "lacks
justification".
"It is with the deepest anguish that we have seen reports of the commencement of
military action in Iraq," External Affairs Ministry spokesman Navtej Sarna told
reporters.
India sincerely hoped that the Iraqi people will not be subjected to further
hardships, sufferings, loss of life and damage to property from an extended military
operation.
In its first reaction to the military strikes in Iraq, he referred to the
differences in the UN Security Council over disarming Iraq, which resulted in
seriously impairing the authority of the UN system.
"The military action begun today thus lacks justification. It also appears from the
various pronouncements of Dr Hans Blix and Dr Al Baradei that military action was
avoidable," he said.
