Imphal: Unidentified militants attacked a police station, resulting in an exchange of fire between the rebels and the police in Senapati district of Manipur early March 21.

Official sources said heavily-armed militants opened fire at the Kangpokpi police station, about 35 km North of Imphal on the Imphal-Guwahati national highway 39, at about 01:00 hours (IST).

The policemen retaliated and the exchange of fire lasted more than an hour, the sources said.

There was no casualty on the side of the police. Casualty, if any, on the side of the militants was not yet known.

The attackers escaped under the cover of darkness to nearby thick hilly jungles, sources said, adding that identity of the militants was yet to be established. Kuki militants of various groups were reportedly active in the area.
