Manipal (Karnataka): President A P J Abdul Kalam on March 28 said while missiles can
be used to defend a country, it can cause pain and problems as is being done in Iraq.
"Why not use the same material to remove pain", Kalam, who is hailed as the "Missile
Man" said at a function in Manipal.
It is necessary to have a vision. Only when you have a dream, it can be transformed
into thoughts, which in turn can result in action, he said speaking after
inaugurating the golden jubilee celebrations of the Kasturba Medical College in
Manipal.
There is a need to transform India into a developed nation. And this goal can be
achieved only through "hard work, sweat and clarity of thought", he said interacting
with school
children later.
"I can see the virtual image of India and children by 2020 will not see illiteracy,
poverty and social differentiation," Kalam said.
"If the children sweat today, they will sing the song of prosperous India tomorrow,"
he said.
The dignitaries present on the occasion included Defence Minister George Fernandes,
Karnataka Governor T N Chaturvedi and Minister for Higher Education, Dr G
Parameshwara.
