New Delhi: Supreme Court on March 28 issued notices to Deputy Prime Minister L K
Advani, Human Resource Development Minister Murli Manohar Joshi, Central Bureau of
Investigation (CBI) and several others on a petition seeking review of the court's
earlier decision allowing transfer of the Ayodhya demolition case trial from Lucknow
to a Rae Bareilly court.
A Bench comprising justice J S Rajendra Babu, justice K G Balakrishnan and justice
Arun Kumar issued notices on a petition filed by Mohammed Aslam alias Bhure seeking
review of the apex court's November 29, 2002 order.
The notices were also issued to the Uttar Pradesh government, Vishwa Hindu Parishad
(VHP) general secretary Ashok Singhal, Uttar Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
president Vinay Katiyar, VHP leaders Giriraj Kishore, Vishnu Hari Dalmiya and BJP
leader Uma Bharti.
On November 11, 2002, the Supreme Court said all the cases along with the one
against Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani and other Cabinet Ministers should be tried
at the special court at Rae Bareilly, putting lid over a controversy as to which
court should try cases pertaining to demolition of the disputed structure at Ayodhya
in 1992.
The controversy arose as the Allahabad High Court had quashed a Uttar Pradesh
government notification of October 1993 assigning the trial of the case against
Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and Uma Bharti to a special court at Lucknow, which had
framed charges against the accused persons.
