London: A pick-up truck crashed into the compound wall of the British Embassy in
Tehran and exploded, killing the driver but injuring no one inside the building.
"Somebody drove a vehicle at the British Embassy in Tehran and it exploded. The
driver was killed but nobody in the Embassy compound was injured," a spokeswoman of
the Prime Minister's Office said.
According to reports reaching London, the vehicle burst into flames after hitting
the Embassy's wall close to its main gate late March 31 night (around 00:15 IST
April 1).
Official sources said the Embassy is "looking at" its security arrangements and is
in discussion with Iranian authorities. It was not yet clear whether it was an
attack or an accident, they added.
In Tehran, Iranian government spokesman Abdollah Ramazanzadeh said, "I doubt that
this was a deliberate attack."
On March 28, tens of thousands of people marched through the centre of Tehran
protesting the US-led attack on Iraq.
More than a dozen windows of the Embassy's main office building were smashed as a
crowd of more than 300 protesters outside it turned violent and pelted
stones.
