Washington: US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said on April 1 it was not clear whether Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was alive or dead, or what his whereabouts were.

"Nobody knows where Saddam Hussein is, whether he's alive or dead," Rumsfeld said at a Pentagon news conference.

"I think it's time to be patient and let things play out ...we'll know in good time whether Saddam Hussein is alive or dead," he said.

The Iraqi leader has delivered two televised addresses since the war began on March 20 and it was unclear why he did not speak in person on April 1, when his Information Minister delivered a statement on his behalf.
