New Delhi: Differences between the government and Opposition parties over the
wording of a resolution against the US-led war on Iraq persisted on April 8 at the
end of two rounds of meetings, forcing Lok Sabha Speaker Manohar Joshi to adjourn
the House twice.
As the House assembled on April 8 morning, Opposition members accused the government
of hesitating to bring a resolution on the issue when all parties had agreed on its
formulation.
Even as the uproar continued over the Opposition demand to suspend Question Hour to
discuss the issue, Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani said Parliamentary Affairs
Minister Sushma Swaraj had gone to meet Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee to seek
his opinion on the draft resolution.
Advani said he had "no objection" to adjourning the House for a short while.
Speaker Manohar Joshi then adjourned the House till 12:30 pm (IST). When the House
re-assembled, the Speaker informed the members that discussions were on for arriving
at a consensus on the resolution and, therefore, he was adjourning the House for the
lunch recess.
