Kuala Lumpur: Holding six policemen responsible for harassment and detention of over
200 Indians, mostly Information Technology (IT) professionals in Malaysia in March,
Malaysian authorities have said disciplinary action would be taken against them soon.
Six policemen, including senior officers, were found to have failed to adhere to
procedures during a crackdown on alleged illegal immigrants in Brickfields area on
March 9, inspector general of police Norian Mai said on April 7.
After India lodged a strong protest with the Malaysian government over the arrest
and ill treatment meted out to the Indians on suspicion of being illegal immigrants,
acting Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi directed police to conduct an
investigation into the Brickfields raid.
Norian said a special board set up to investigate the incident has completed its
probe and identified the six policemen who breached the procedures. The six were
from the Brickfields district police headquarters, Bernama news agency reported.
He, however, declined to name the policemen or identify their ranks.
"With the action against our (police) personnel, we hope the issue will come to an
end," he said.
Asked what type of action would be taken against the six policemen, he said the
board was studying the breach of the rules and procedures on case-by-case basis.
