New Delhi: As many as 1,707 terrorists and foreign mercenaries were killed in Jammu and Kashmir during 2002 as against 620 in 2000, Rajya Sabha was informed on April 9.

Replying to supplementaries during Question Hour, Minister of State for Home Harin Pathak said 453 security forces personnel were killed during 2002 as against 536 the previous year.

As many as 397 security personnel lost their lives during 2000, he said.

Out of 6.19 lakh applications for conferring the status of freedom fighters received by the government, the Centre has cleared 1.64 lakh cases, the minister said.

The government has also decided to confer freedom fighter status on pending applications from those who fought for the liberation of Goa. This would be applicable for such persons who had applied till August 1, 2002.
