Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati's controversial remarks about Hindu
gods in the second video tape released by Samajwadi Party (SP) have triggered
resentment in saffron camp, with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, legislators
and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) activists demanding unqualified apology from
her.
"I am waiting for my national leaders to react. If they do not react to this, then i
will speak my heart out," state BJP president Vinay Katiyar said.
UP BJP spokesman H N Dixit said a political leader, especially one who holds a
Constitutional post, should avoid making any comment, which could hurt the feelings
of a section of the society.
State BJP general secretary Kesho Mehra said Mayawati's comments have hurt the
sentiments of crores of Hindus and therefore she should apologise.
A delegation of Uttar Pradesh BJP legislators would meet Prime Minister Atal Behari
Vajpayee, requesting him to intervene to "save the party from further degeneration
following outburst of Mayawati against Hindu gods".
"We are trying to contact BJP's senior national leaders to gather support in this
matter," a senior party MLA said.
He said leader of BJP legislature party Lalji Tandon, who is already in New Delhi,
would apprise the national leadership about the situation emerging after
sacrilegious comments made by Mayawati.
"Mayawati has insulted Hindus by using sacrilegious words against our gods. The
Chief Minister should immediately apologise," senior RSS leader Vijay Agarwal said.
Agarwal said BJP's national leaders should take note of the utterances of the UP
chief minister. He said though utterances by an individual against Hinduism did not
affect the spirit of the religion, it created confusion in the society.
Bajrang Dal activists have threatened to take to streets if Mayawati does not take
back her statements against Hindu gods.
Bajrang Dal convener Ved Prakash Sachchan said Mayawati should retract her words or
else she should get ready to face the ire of Hindus.
