Dubai: The Saddam Hussein regime seemed to have collapsed in Baghdad on April 9 with US troops expanding and consolidating their control and large-scale looting breaking out in the Iraqi capital amidst scenes of jubilation after three weeks of war.

Saddam Hussein's regime seems on it's way out In London, a spokesman of British Prime Minister Tony Blair said that Iraq's command and control structures in Baghdad appeared to have broken down and the people there were giving US troops "very real welcome".

"The most compelling evidence of fast-moving situation is the view that command and control in Baghdad appears to have disintegrated," he said, but warned, "We need to be careful and cautious about getting ahead of ourselves because their is localised paramilitary resistance... it could be stubborn and fierce."

The fate of 66-year-old Saddam Hussein remained uncertain after US bombed a building in Baghdad where they believed the Iraqi leader was holding a meeting with his two sons and his close aides on April 7.
