Ayodhya: Tension was brewing on April 9 night in Ayodhya after the death of a
constable in the acquired land near the disputed site, sparking violent protests
from Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) personnel, who manhandled a top police
official and burnt a few police vehicles leaving five persons injured.
The condition of deputy inspector general (police) K N D Dwivedi, who was
hospitalised, was stated to be serious after he fell unconscious when he was
manhandled by rampaging PAC cops. His official vehicle was damaged and burnt in the
Ram Janambhoomi complex.
The atmosphere was tense with PAC cops reportedly not allowing people to enter
Ayodhya for the Ram Navami celebrations on April 11.
Five persons, including assistant commandant of 23 Bn PAC, Moradabad, Indrapal
Singh, three policemen – Prajapati, J Misra, H L Yadav – and a sweeper Himmat Lal
were admitted in district hospital and the condition of two of them was stated to be
serious, they said.
Trouble broke out when a PAC constable R K Tewari, who was on duty at one of the
watchtowers, allegedly fell down and succumbed to serious injuries in a hospital.
The PAC personnel posted in the acquired land apparently agitated over the tragedy
took out a protest march amid stray incidents of clashes with passers by.
