New Delhi: Visiting Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga on April 10 briefed
Indian leaders on the Lankan peace process as New Delhi reaffirmed its commitment to
the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the island nation.
India also conveyed its support to the restoration of lasting peace through a non-
violent and negotiated settlement that meets the just aspirations of all elements of
the Sri Lankan society.
New Delhi's support to the peace process was conveyed during meetings Kumaratunga
had with Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and other leaders.
Kumaratunga, who is on a four-day working visit, called on President A P J Abdul
Kalam, had a private lunch with Vajpayee, besides having meetings with Deputy Prime
Minister L K Advani, External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha, Finance Minister
Jaswant Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi.
During the parleys, she briefed them of her perception of the ongoing peace talks
between the Sri Lankan government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam
(LTTE).
Since her visit to India in April last year, there have been six rounds of peace
talks. "Our idea is to listen to all the actors in the peace process," an External
Affairs Ministry spokesman said.
Asked whether the issue of regrouping of LTTE figured in the talks, he said the Sri
Lankan President has her own perspective about LTTE.
As far as India was concerned, "LTTE remains a proscribed organisation", he
said.
