Shillong: Assam Governor Lt Gen (retd) S K Sinha on April 10 said that militants of
the banned ULFA (United Liberation Front of Assam) and Bodo outfits were getting
sanctuaries in Bhutan and alleged the himalayan kingdom had done precious little to
oust those camps from its soil.
"Although Bhutan government is assuring India that it will take action against these
(ULFA and Bodo) militants, on the ground, there is nothing. These people are
enjoying complete sanctuaries in Bhutan," Sinha told reporters on the sidelines of a
North East tourism summit.
The Assam Governor, while saying that the militants shifted their base to the
neighbouring himalayan kingdom did not completely rule out the possibility of some
of them moving to Garo hills region of Meghalaya also.
Stating that his was the first state to form a unified command in tackling
militancy, the former Army officer also supported 'in principle' a similar move in
other places to curb the menace.
Sinha said to tackle the insurgency in the Garo hills region in Meghalaya,
governments of the state, Assam and the Centre should combat jointly. "Assam is
ready to extend its help in this regard," he said.
