Ideological differences won't affect govt: Maya
Saturday, April 12 2003 17:12 Hrs (IST)

Lucknow: Ruling out any threat to her coalition government in the wake of Samajwadi Party releasing CDs containing her controversial utterances, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati said on April 12 that despite different ideologies of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the alliance was functioning smoothly.

"Both parties pursue different ideologies but their coalition is based on mutual understanding and there is no threat to it," Mayawati, who called on senior BJP leader and Urban Development Minister Lalji Tandon on his birthday, told reporters.

On her controversial remarks, she said they were aimed at driving home a point among her party workers and does not reflect her disrespect towards anyone as it was a matter concerning the party and had nothing to do with the mutual understanding among the coalition partners.

Mayawati said both BSP and BJP voters, supporters and workers follow different agenda and they are educated in different manner to consolidate their respective mass base.

The party leadership has made it clear to their cadres that the coalition was formed out of compulsion as both parties had failed to get a majority on their own in the Assembly elections, she said.

Tandon gave a clean chit to Mayawati on the CD controversy saying she had her own style of addressing her partymen, which has helped her increase BSP's base.
