Begusarai: A policeman was killed when members of the notorious Dilip Singh criminal gang fired indiscriminately on a police patrol party in Manjhaul sub-division of Bihar's Begusarai district late April 14 night, police said on April 15.

They said the criminals attacked a police party led by the officer in-charge of Cheria Bariyarpur police station, Subodh Chaudhary, and opened fire killing the driver of the police jeep. The OC and other policemen were fortunate to escape.

The deceased cop has been identified as Kishore Kumar of the same police station.

Dilip Singh, a history-sheeter and "mukhiya" of Cheria Bariyarpur panchayat, attacked the police in retaliation to the police attaching his property on April 13 in connection with several criminal cases, the police said.

Around 12 relatives and aides of Singh have been arrested for attack on the police, they said.

Superintendent of police Kumar Rajesh Chandra, along with a large contingent of police, is camping in the area.
