New Delhi: Adopting a wait and watch approach to the Iraq developments, India on
April 16 indicated that it would await installation of a new government in Baghdad
to determine the future course of bilateral ties.
"The situation (in Iraq) is still fluid," an External Affairs Ministry spokesman
told reporters.
Asked whether India continued to recognise the Iraqi Embassy in India, he
said, "There is no notification from any government in Iraq to the contrary.
"We have to see what happens and which government takes over and what they decide
about their international representation."
On whether the Iraqi mission in New Delhi enjoyed the diplomatic status and other
protocol facilities, he said "theoretically yes".
India has made it clear that at the moment its focus was on extending humanitarian
assistance to the people of Iraq through the UN agencies.
New Delhi has also suggested that the reconstruction efforts in Iraq should be under
the UN aegis.
