Srinagar: Hurriyat Conference, which had called for a two-day strike during Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's visit to Kashmir, called off the shut down on April 19, claiming the purpose of the strike was served with "the total and exemplary" response to the call on April 18.

Expressing satisfaction over the response of the people to its strike call, Hurriyat said in a statement, "The total and exemplary strike observed by the people today (April 18) demonstrated that they are with us.

"The response of the people to the strike demonstrated that they want resolution of the Kashmir issue through result-oriented and meaningful dialogue," it said, adding "today's strike is in fact a plebiscite".

Thanking people for responding to the strike, it said, "The purpose of the strike call has been achieved and as such there will be no strike tomorrow (April 19)."
