New Delhi: Congress on April 21 supported the demand for a code of conduct for Chief
Ministers but said this required a political initiative.
"We are in agreement on the issue as it is not correct for a Chief Minister to run
riot. But it does not mean that those who have misused offices should go scot-free,"
party spokesman S Jaipal Reddy told reporters.
Stating that no government should indulge in political vendetta, he said, "I don't
think that evolving a code of conduct for CMs is a matter of legal initiative. It is
a matter of political initiative."
The filing of cases by Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh against Samajwadi Party
leaders provoked members in the Lok Sabha to demand a code of conduct for Chief
Ministers.
Asked whether some Congress Chief Ministers, like Captain Amrinder Singh, were also
settling scores with their political adversaries, Reddy said, "Our Chief Ministers
do not indulge in such things."
The Punjab Chief Minister, he said, had initiated action against Akali Dal leaders
after obtaining substantial evidence against them.
