Kathmandu: In a setback to the peace process in the Himalayan Kingdom, the first
round of talks between Nepal's government and the Maoists were on April 21 postponed
indefinitely after the two sides failed to agree on an agenda.
While the government wanted it to be an introductory meeting, which would focus on
reconstruction and rehabilitation, the Maoists wanted to discuss the political
agenda from the beginning.
"We don't want to sit down for the introductory talks, we want to discuss the
political agenda from the beginning," said a Maoist activist nick named as Mahesh.
We were not interested in having a cup of tea with the government's team. We want to
discuss the political problem first," the Maoists said.
The two sides were scheduled to meet on April 21 in a Kathmandu hotel.
