PM must take initiative to end truckers' stir: Jaya

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on April 22 said Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee should meet the representatives of truckers to end the lorry strike.

In a statement, she said the Union Surface Transport Minister B C Khanduri spoke to her on phone on April 21 on the ongoing transporters' strike.

She had apprised him of the "effective" steps taken by the state government for the movement of essential commodities, petroleum products and ensuring adequate supply of perishable commodities.

The state government was liasing with the Railways and oil companies for movement of petroleum products and district collectors had been instructed to monitor the situation to ensure availability of essential commodities.

Jayalalithaa said she had stressed the need for taking immediate steps to resolve the strike. She said the minister should take up the issue with the Prime Minister immediately and ensure a meeting between the Prime Minister and transporters to resolve the issue.
