Centre assures all assistance to storm-hit Assam
Thursday, April 24 2003 13:35 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: The Centre on April 24 assured all possible assistance to Assam hit by a killer storm that left a trail of death and destruction.

"We are ready for all sorts of help" to the state, Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee said when senior Congress member Manmohan Singh raised the issue in Rajya Sabha.

Terming the calamity as a matter of grave concern, he said the Centre was in touch with the state government on relief and rehabilitation work.

The worst ever storm claimed the lives of several people and rendered thousands homeless, Singh said and urged the Centre to take all possible measures to assist the affected families.

Arun Kumar Sarma, AGP, said a disaster management team should visit the state to assess the damage.
