Dawood's brother, 2 others remanded to JC till May 2
Thursday, April 24 2003 21:07 Hrs (IST)

Mumbai: Iqbal Hassan Ibrahim Shaikh, younger brother of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, and two others were on April 24 further remanded to judicial custody till May 2 by a special court in a case of alleged extortion and land-grabbing under Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).

Others arrested with Iqbal are Abdul Rehman Abdul Gafoor Shaikh and Abdul Sattar Haji Hiva Radhanpur.

The trio are facing the charge of forcibly evicting a woman from her hut, which obstructed the entrance of a shopping centre allegedly owned by Dawood Ibrahim and his associate Chhota Shakeel in South Mumbai.

Police alleged that investigations had reached a crucial stage and the custody of the accused was needed to unearth the crime.

Police alleged that this case was the tip of the ice-berg and the modus operandi of the trio was to help the Dawood Ibrahim syndicate in channelising funds into the real estate by acquiring old buildings and converting them into multiplexes.

Iqbal was deported from Dubai last month and was arrested in a murder case in which he has already secured bail. This is the second case in which he has been arrested under MCOCA.
