'India must not assume ISI involved in violence'
Thursday, April 24 2003 10:01 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi: Pakistan on April 23 insisted it was "committed" to combating terrorism and suggested that India should not "assume" that
Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) was behind every violent incident in the country.
Soon after Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee told Parliament that talks could open with Islamabad when it stopped sponsoring and
supporting terrorism, Pakistan Foreign Minister Mohammad Kasuri said the two countries would have to "learn to trust each other".
"We are committed to combating terrorism. If we want to resume relationship, let's not jump to accusations," Kasuri told 'NDTV 24x7' over
phone from Islamabad.
Stressing that "we have to learn to trust each other", he said, "There are people in Pakistan who blame Research and Analysis Wing
(RAW) for Monsoon failure".
"We should not assume that every violent incident in either country is handiwork of either RAW or ISI," he said.
He hailed Vajpayee for acting "very wisely in a statesman-like manner" to distance himself from certain statements, which "raised the pitch
in the region" and "may have to do a lot with focussing international attention on the region".
On the South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation (SAARC) summit, Kasuri said it would be held as soon as possible and hoped
Vajpayee and External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha would travel to Pakistan on invitation.
"For this we have to have the concurrence of other (SAARC) governments," he said, adding Islamabad would do everything required to
encourage their participation in the summit.
