Mayawati lashes out Mulayam, calls him corrupt
Thursday, April 24 2003 10:28 Hrs (IST)

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on April 24 lashed out at Samajwadi Party (SP) supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav for levelling "baseless" charges of corruption and casteism against her.

"Mulayam Singh should peep into his past… Mulayam had himself been corrupt and whenever he came to power he misused the CM's discretionary fund," said Mayawati in a statement released by information department.

She said family members of Yadav openly indulged in malpractices while recruiting poor and unemployed people in government vacancies.

"At that time, it was a topic of discussion among people that Mulayam had taken money from youth but had not given them jobs," said Mayawati, adding that connection of party with corrupt capitalists and brokers was well known.

Accusing Mulayam as being casteist, she said all the important posts in his party were being filled with family members of Yadav.

She alleged that SP had made hollow claims that it was representative of all castes. "Whereas the fact is, Yadav was only concerned about the welfare of only one caste," she said.

Mayawati was reacting to Yadav's statement calling her corrupt for having spent crores of Rupees on her birthday. Yadav on April 23 led his party's cycle 'halla bol' rally, cycling over 10 kms in the city to apprise people of the misrule of Mayawati-led government.
