UP Congress wants Priyanka, Rahul in politics
Friday, April 25 2003 12:47 Hrs (IST)

Lucknow: With Lok Sabha elections slated for next year, faction ridden Uttar Pradesh Congress afflicted with a declining electoral graph, has made a demand for involving Priyanka Vadra and Rahul Gandhi in active politics to brighten its poll prospects.

A demand to this effect was made at a recent meeting of the party's office bearers, who asked the treasurer and in-charge of Uttar Pradesh affairs in the party Motilal Vora to impress upon All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Sonia Gandhi the need for bringing Priyanka and Rahul in active politics.

Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) general secretary and MLA Pradeep Mathur said the presence of Priyanka and Rahul "would activate and encourage the youth, which was are gradually losing interest in party affairs".

A senior party leader, on condition of anonymity, said Congress workers in the state were looking forward to the involvement of any of these two members of the Gandhi family in "active politics" to overcome ongoing factionalism in the party and prepare it for the coming elections.

If indications are anything to go by, the party high command is set for an overhaul of the state unit before the Lok Sabha polls and in case Priyanka decides to join active politics it would be a boon for the Congress, he added.
