Mumbaikar back home after escaping from Iraq jail
Friday, April 25 2003 15:40 Hrs (IST)

Mumbai: A Mumbaikar Mohammad Anis Bashir Saboowallah, who was sentenced to life imprisonment by Saddam Hussein in Iraq and escaped after a jailbreak, has united with his family members in Mumbai, according to family sources.

Bashir (42), a businessman, was sentenced for making statements against the dictator during Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990.

He was traced by an Indian television crew a fortnight back, following a jailbreak after the Americans bombarded some of the jails.

Bashir had sent back his family members to India after Saddam's invasion of Kuwait.

The family came to know about his sentence only in 1994 through the Indian Embassy in Baghdad.
