Nitish rules out privatisation of Railways
Saturday, April 26 2003 21:12 Hrs (IST)

Patna: Railway Minister, Nitish Kumar on April 26 ruled out the possibility of privatisation of the Railways.

Privatisation of Railways was impossible as no agency other than the government could run it, Nitish Kumar told the 16th conference of the All India Central Bank Employees' Federation (AIBEA) and 6th All India Central Bank Officers' Association and asked the banks to invest in the efforts of the ministry to develop infrastructure.

Kumar said the process of privatising the Railways was first initiated in the United Kingdom but the trend had been reversed and the Railway sector was again being taken over by the British government.

Kumar, however, expressed concern over the low credit deposit ratio in Bihar and said the nationalised banks should come forward with schemes to give loans to marginal farmers, artisans, and weavers to make them self sufficient.
