'PM will create unbreakable records like Tendulkar'
Monday, April 28 2003 20:52 Hrs (IST)

Raipur: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) general secretary Pramod Mahajan on April 28 hinted at early Lok Sabha polls and called on party workers to create history in 2004 by making Atal Behari Vajpayee Prime Minister for the fourth consecutive term.

Addressing the national executive of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), Mahajan said the Lok Sabha polls are scheduled in September 2004. "But September is not a good time for polls due to rainfall. Hence, the election could be held either in scorching heat of May or in the pleasant weather of January or February, 2004," he said.

Although the party Central leadership will take the final decision on this, workers should not wait for the polls and begin their preparation right from today, the senior party leader said.

"This year's elections to the four states – Chattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi – are also important for the party," Mahajan said.

Exuding confidence about winning the 2004 Lok Sabha polls, he said, "Vajpayee will create a new history of being consecutively elected to head the government in four successive parliaments."

Mahajan said earlier, Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi were Prime Ministers four times, but were not elected to successive parliaments. "By winning the 2004 polls, Vajpayee will achieve this distinction, which in the coming days would be very difficult for others to accomplish like the records of Sachin Tendulkar," he said.

Stating that achievements alone could not help any government to return to power, the BJP leader urged workers to strengthen the organisation.

Highlighting achievements of the government, Mahajan said when Vajpayee took over as PM, the country had only three lakh mobile connections, which today have touched 1.26 crore.

He asked party workers not to be carried away by crowds at a party public meeting, and said it had been found that candidates had failed to win even in rallies where large crowd turnout had been seen in areas visited by the Prime Minister or Congress chief Sonia Gandhi.

The national executive of BJYM began on April 27 and was addressed also by Union Ministers Ramesh Bais and Dilip Singh Judeo, state BJP president Dr Raman Singh, national general secretary Sanjay Joshi and BJYM national president G Kisan Reddy among others.
