Ultras fire at train in Assam, 3 passengers hurt
Monday, April 28 2003 14:37 Hrs (IST)
Diphu: Three passengers of the BG-UP passenger express were injured when United Peoples' Democratic Solidarity (UPDS) militants fired
at the train in Assam's Karbi Anglong district, official sources said.
The militants fired at the train, which was on its way from Diphu to Baghmari, on April 27 as part of its "indefinite bandh of Indian railways
and all national highways" agitation.
The injured passengers were taken to the civil hospital. Train services have not been affected and after a brief suspension, normal
functioning was restored.
Security in the trains and along railway tracks have been further strengthened and patrolling has been intensified in the district.
The UPDS has called the indefinite bandh to demand withdrawal of clause 8 of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) accord, which
states that the Centre agreed to consider sympathetically the inclusion of Bodo Kacharis living in the two hill districts autonomous council
areas in the scheduled tribes (hill) list.
