'Bangla won’t be used for anti-India activities'
Wednesday, April 30 2003 17:02 Hrs (IST)
Dhaka: In the wake of India's concerns, Bangladesh has assured that it will not allow its soil to be used
for inimical activities against its neighbour even as the two countries agreed to work towards a long-term
resolution of illegal immigration, which recently snowballed into a major issue.
"In response to Indian concerns regarding the activities of Indian insurgent groups, the Bangladesh side
reaffirmed its commitment not to allow its territory to be used for any activities inimical to the interests of
India," a joint statement released at the end of foreign secretary-level talks
held after a gap of nearly two-and-a-half years, said.
There was agreement on this and a wide range of issues at the meeting held between visiting Indian
Foreign Secretary Kanwal Sibal and his Bangladesh counterpart Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury. It was
agreed to revive the Joint Boundary Working Groups who would soon meet for resolution of the border
demarcation issue and to hold the Joint Economic Commission meeting headed by their Foreign
Ministers in July.
The two foreign secretaries said that they have agreed to work towards a long-term resolution of illegal
migration "in a balanced manner."
The two countries agreed to strengthen bus and train links to facilitate movement of people with
Bangladesh pledging to take steps for early commencement of the Dhaka-Agartala bus service.
