Lanka peace-brokers to hold talks with Indian leaders
Thursday, May 1 2003 15:33 Hrs (IST)
Colombo: Sri Lanka's peace-brokers are due to hold talks with Indian leaders on the island's stalled
peace bid, officials said on May 1.
Norwegian Deputy Foreign Minister Vidar Helgesen and Japan's special peace envoy to Sri Lanka
Yasushi Akashi will be in New Delhi at the weekend for official talks, they said.
Sri Lanka's Economic Reforms Minister Milinda Moragoda, who is also a peace negotiator, will travel to
New Delhi on May 1 to join talks with External Affairs Minister Yaswant Sinha and top officials of Prime
Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's office.
The diplomatic moves come in the backdrop of Tamil Tiger rebels suspending their peace talks with the
Colombo government on April 21.
Both Sri Lanka and peace-broker Norway have kept New Delhi informed during every step in the island's
peace bid with Tamil Tigers.
Sri Lanka has expressed confidence that the talks can resume soon after a letter from Prime Minister
Ranil Wikremesinghe responded to Tigers' charges that the government had failed to deliver on "critical
issues."
