Thursday, May 1 2003 16:52 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi: The RailTel Corporation of India, a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Railways,
has successfully tested the provision of Broadband Internet on running trains for the first time in the
world.
The achievement would enable RailTel to utilise its large bandwidth at every station for commercial
purposes and also would enable internet related facilities to the travelling public at railway platforms and
in running trains to keep the people connected to the world while travelling.
The tests were carried out between Tughlakabad and Faridabad stations of Northern Railway from April
15 to 26, 2003.
The Ministry of Railways would be soon nominating a train for introduction of onboard Internet facilities
by RailTel, the release said.
Internet onboard the trains would be operated through pre-paid cards which would be made available to
users.
RailTel would be launching cyber cafes and kiosks at various railway stations facilitating browsing,
Internet telephony and video conferencing all over the country, it said.
