Friday, May 2 2003 10:30 Hrs (IST)

Baghdad: Seven people were killed on May 1 in a fire at a gas station in Central Baghdad, a US soldier said.

The reasons for the fire were not immediately known, but an employee at the Karama Hospital who helped evacuate the wounded said that according to one of the wounded, shots were fired toward a gas tank just before the fire broke out.

Rudi Sahel, 14, whose brother was injured, said there had been an argument and that someone fired a Kalashnikov rifle.

A thin column of smoke and orange flames were still seen several hours after the incident.
