New Delhi: India on May 1 offered to extend assistance to Turkey where the city of Bingo was hit by a powerful earthquake on May 1 morning, killing more than 80 people.

In a letter to Turkish Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha said he was asking our Embassy in Ankara to consult with Turkish authorities to know if any assistance could be provided by India.

He noted that Turkish authorities have a well-deserved reputation for their quick response and mature management of a crisis situation of this nature and hoped their efforts would bring relief to all those affected by this sad and unfortunate happening.
