Pakistan terms envoy's appointment a 'right step'
Friday, May 2 2003 18:26 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi: Pakistan on May 2 termed as "positive" and a "step in the right direction" Prime Minister Atal
Behari Vajpayee's decision to appoint a new High Commissioner to Islamabad and restore air links
saying it would take a decision after due consideration.
"We are glad that the Prime Minister of India has said so. It is a step in the right direction," Pakistan
Foreign Minister Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri said.
Asked if Pakistan would reciprocate the Indian decisions, he said his Prime Minsiter Zafarullah Khan
Jamali has already taken the initiative "by picking up the phone and speaking to Prime Minister of India
after his speech in Srinagar which we had also welcomed then".
He said that the Pakistani Prime Minister would "obviously keep all this factors in view before he
announces an action".
Kasuri said Pakistan had all along been maintaining, "We should not reduce the level of (diplomatic)
representation in the two capitals."
He said that Pakistan maintained its High Commissioner in Delhi for many months before he was "forced
to leave India" after New Delhi called back its High Commissioner from Islamabad.
