Saturday, May 3 2003 15:19 Hrs (IST)

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh government is consulting law department for extending reservation facility to scheduled castes (SC) and scheduled tribes (ST) in the private sector, Chief Minister Mayawati said on May 3.

"The principal law secretary is being consulted on how to provide reservation facility to SCs and STs" in the private sector in the state, she said.

Mayawati, who is a strong advocate of reservation in the private sector, said she wrote a letter to Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee in this regard a few days ago.

"Through the letter I have tried to draw the attention of the Prime Minister on the need for extending reservation facility in the public sector units, which are being thrown open for the private sector by way of equity participation or disinvestment of their shares," she said.

Judiciary, Rajya Sabha and legislative councils were the other areas she pointed out in the letter where reservation facility should be extended.

The Chief Minister has also sought an increase in the number of reserved seats in the state Assembly in view of the increase in their population.
