Bhopal gas victims in US protest for 2nd day
Saturday, May 3 2003 12:29 Hrs (IST)
New York: Two women survivors of 1984 Bhopal gas leak tragedy continued their indefinite fast for the
second day, demanding that Dow Chemical own up its responsibility towards the victims and
environment degradation.
"Rasheeda Bee and Champa Devi and Satinath Sarangi of the International Campaign for Justice in
Bhopal were high spirit," their spokesman N Jayaraman said on May 3.
The protesters held their agitation under the shadow of Mahatma Gandhi's statue in the Union Park in
downtown Manhattan.
They have not been given permit to hold vigil at night.
Therefore, they sit near the statue till late in the evening and then go back to places where they are
staying and return in the morning, he said.
Some 8,000 people were killed and thousands injured when a deadly gas leaked from the Union Carbide
plant in Bhopal. Dow Chemicals later took over Union Carbide. But Dow Chemicals rejects the contention
that it has inherited Union Carbide's Bhopal liabilities.
