Ten injured in CPM-Cong clash in West Bengal

Royganj (WB): Ten persons - five each of the CPM (Communist Party of India-Marxist) and Congress ---
were on May 4 injured in a clash between supporters of the two parties as political violence continued in
Islampur of Uttar Dinajpur district in the run up to the Panchayat poll on May 11.
Police said the clash broke out in the villages of Moulani and Malitola under Islampur police station area,
near violence-hit Chopra, in 9 am. Of the injured, condition of
three CPM workers was serious. They were shifted to the North Bengal Medical College.
The district Congress secretary, Goutam Gupta alleged that CPM workers attacked the houses of two
Congress supporters leading to the clash.
Meanwhile, a peace meeting was held by several political parties at Islampur. District leaders of CPM,
Congress and Trinamool Congress attended the meeting with the Divisional Commissioner of Jalpaiguri
range, Bappaditya Chakrabarty was in the chair.
However, the district Congress secretary alleged that his party's several Panchayat samity and 16 Gram
Panchayat candidates could not enter their areas because of violence. He
appealed to the district magistrate not to hold election in three Zilla Parishad seats in Chopra and
Islampur.
The meeting decided to deployment of additional forces in disturbed Chopra and Islampur areas.
