Srinagar: Three militants belonging to the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) outfit were gunned down on May 4 in a nine-hour long encounter with security forces in Budgam district in Central Kashmir, official sources said.

The foreign militants, who were hiding in the house of one Ghulam Nabi at Chewdara in Beerwah area of the district, were killed when security forces lobbed mortar shells to flush them out, the sources said.

Acting on a tip-off that militants were hiding in the house of Ghulam Nabi, a forest department employee, the security forces cordoned off the building.

The militants hiding inside opened fire at the security forces, which was retaliated and the exchange of fire continued for nine hours, the sources said.

Besides the bodies of the slain ultras, the security forces recovered three AK rifles, they added.
