Tigers put riders for resuming Lankan peace talks
Wednesday, May 7 2003 19:30 Hrs (IST)
Colombo: Tamil Tigers, who suspended Norwegian-brokered peace talks with the Sri Lankan
government, on May 7 said they could come back to the negotiating table if the government took
some "positive action" this week.
"The coming week is crucial... if the government takes positive action we can consider participating in
the talks and the aid group meeting," LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) chief negotiator Anton
Balasingham told a Japanese peace envoy.
Balasingham said the LTTE wanted action with regard to the resettlement of internally displaced people
and stepped up rehabilitation work in the embattled North East.
Earlier the visiting dignitary Yasushi Akashi held two hours of talks with LTTE supremo Vellupillai
Prabhakaran in the Northern Wanni region.
Balasingham also accused the government of paying too much attention to security-related matters and
doing nothing on the humanitarian front.
Akashi has been trying to get the Tigers end their boycott of talks, which they announced on April 21,
and also attend a June 9-10 international meeting that Japan is hosting to drum up international aid for
rebuilding Sri Lanka.
