Pak restores full diplomatic, sporting ties with India
Wednesday, May 7 2003 10:23 Hrs (IST)

Islamabad: Pakistan on May 6 announced restoration of full diplomatic relations, air, train and bus links as also sporting ties with India and called for confidence-building measures on nuclear issues and a comprehensive dialogue, including on Kashmir.

Unveiling a slew of confidence building measures at a press conference, Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and said Pakistan would continue to co-operate with international community to eliminate this scourge.

However, in a veiled reference to Kashmir, Jamali, who got Opposition backing to the peace moves at an all-party meeting on May 5 night, said of equal importance was the promotion of regional peace and security in regions of the world "suffering from tensions and unresolved conflicts".

Favouring resumption of dialogue from where it was left in Agra, Jamali, whose announcements came four days after Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee decided to send back Indian High Commissioner and restore air links, said, "I believe all issues have to be addressed sincerely and constructively through sustained dialogue.

"India should put the acrimony to the back-burner and discuss all issues including the core issue of Jammu and Kashmir," he said, adding that the national consensus was behind him to hold dialogue with India.

The Pakistan Prime Minister assured Kashmiris that "at all stages, their interest would be of supreme importance".

Announcing immediate release of all Indian fishermen, 22 Sikh youths and 14 crew members of a cargo boat, Jamali favoured resumption of sporting contacts beginning with cricket and hockey.
