First SARS case confirmed in Karnataka

Bangalore: The first confirmed Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) case in Karnataka was reported on May 7 with the blood tests of an Indian national who returned from Malaysia last month showing positive, a senior health official said.

Thirty-year-old Dr Ranjan Pai, working as a chief executive officer (CEO) with a Indo-Malaysian joint venture, has been quarantined at the Manipal Hospital in Manipal after tests by the National Institute of Virology in Pune confirmed positive for the SARS virus, Karnataka SARS nodal officer Dr C K Kumaraswamy said.

He said he would recover in the next two or three days.
