Arrested Kashmiri editor may be slapped with POTA
Sunday, May 11 2003 20:44 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi: Delhi police on May 11 claimed to have recovered incriminating documents from the
residence of arrested Kashmir Press Service editor Ghulam Mohiudin Bhat showing his alleged links with
pro-Pakistan outfit Hizbul Mujahideen even as it was contemplating to file an additional charge under
Prevention Of Terrorist Act (POTA) against him.
Police sources said the team, which carried out raids at the Srinagar-based residence and office, had
seized some incriminating documents from the office of the local news agency Kashmir Press Service,
which was owned by Bhat.
The sources alleged that some of the documents indicated his "active links" with Hizbul Mujahideen and
added that the police was contemplating to slap an additional charge under POTA against Bhat
for "acting as a conduit for supplying money to the militant groups".
His links with Hizbul Mujahideen could also land him in the ambit of POTA as the outfit was among the
terrorist organisations banned under the Law.
A Delhi court sent Bhat, arrested on May 9 near Lajpat Nagar area, to police custody for three days on
May 10.
Police recovered Rs 6.5 lakh from his possession besides a wristwatch with an in-built camera, a mobile
phone and Chinese pistol and magazines.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Ashok Chand said that the incriminating documents
recovered from his office were being scrutinised. "Majority of them were in Urdu and they were being
translated," he added.
The computer hard disk, seized from his office, was being sent to Hyderabad for examination.
