BJP's "Sahyog" turns out to be a damp squib
Tuesday, May 13 2003 19:45 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi: The much-hyped "Sahyog" envisaging daily interaction between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
cadres and party's Central Ministers at party headquarters appeared to be a non-starter.
Ministers Kashiram Rana, Sumitra Mahajan and Satyabrata Mukherjee were at the party headquarters
to interact with party men and to listen to their "suggestions" as part of an interaction programme, but
there were not many.
Party sources said the response was similar on May 12 too when the programme was started.
"After all, which worker would come all the way to the capital to convey his views to Central Ministers.
Their views could be put forth at the district level instead of at the party headquarters," party sources
said.
The programme launched with much fanfare by Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani along with party
president M Venkaiah Naidu has drawn up a schedule under which three Union Ministers would have a
daily two-hour interaction with party cadres.
Naidu had specifically stated at the launching that these interactions should not be a forum for cadres to
only seek transfer and posting of officials but they rather make suggestions on how to strengthen the
party machinery in the states.
The move to launch this programme was part of the party's preparations for not only the four Assembly
elections slated for later this year, but also to prepare for the Lok Sabha elections in 2004.
